Distinguished guests at Stiirling Castle

This morning, I collected from central Edinburgh and then embarked on a trip as follows:

  • First to Castle Campbell near Dollar. Unfortunately, the site was unexpectedly closed but we did obtain images of the exterior.

  • Next to the impressive Stirling Castle, one of Scotland’s top visitor attractions where we visited all the key aspects including Royal Apartments, Chapel Royal, Great Hall, Kitchens and Tapestry Weaving studio. We were also able to view site of the Battle of Stirling Bridge and the Wallace Monument. We had lunch at the Castle.

  • Next to nearby Doune Castle which is a substantial structure in good state of repair. This site is famous for featuring in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Outlander.

  • Next, we drove up the A9 (north) turning off at Braco to visit the Ardoch Roman Fort, a massive site which was used by the Romans in the 1st,2nd and 3rd centuries. Close by is a medieval Packhorse Bridge.

  • Next, we continued north to Dunning where we called at the church to view the famous 9th century, Dupplin Cross.

  • Next, to Forteviot and then on to Birnam and our lodgings for the night. After checking in we walked down to the banks of the River Tay to visit the famous Birnam Oak.

Tomorrow we undertake a backroads tour.
