Sampling whisky at Kilchoman, Islay, Scotland

This morning, we departed our lodgings in Bowmore and embarked on a trip as follows:

  • First to Kilchoman Distillery. Here we joined the 10.00 am tour led by a very able guide. Kilchoman is the youngest and smallest distillery on Islay having commenced production in 2005 and now produces about 140, 000 litres of spirit p.a.This distillery is very traditional, being based on  a working farm, has its own maltings floor and sources about 30 pct of required barley from own fields with balance from Port Ellen Maltings on Islay.

  • Next we drove to nearby Finlaggan, an important archaeological and historic site which was the home of the MacDonald chiefs from the 12th to 16th centuries. From here the Lords of the Isles ruled Scotland’s Atlantic seaboard until their power was terminated by King James IV.There is evidence that the Finlaggan site has been occupied by man well prior to the 12th century, in fact dating to prehistoric times ( about 5000 years ago) through to the Iron Age ( 500 BC-500 AD).

  • Next, we had a light lunch at Port Askaig and then drove round to Bunnahabhain Distillery which, unusually for Islay, produces a malt which is predominantly unpeated. Production capacity is about 2.5m litres p.a.Principal product is a 12 year old. Now part of the same group which owns Tobermory and Deanston Distilleries. We joined the 2.30 pm tour which was led by another very able guide,.
