Bell inside Abernethy Round Tower, Scotland

Thus evening, I am posting information on the village of Abernethy in Perthshire, central Scotland. key facts:

  • Located about 8.5 miles S.E.of Perth.
  • Population about 945.
  • Name is derived from the Brittonic word aber which means ‘meeting of the waters’. However, the water today constitutes a barely discernible stream.
  • Famous for its 11th/12th century round tower which was part of an important Christian site dating back to around the 7th century. The tower design was influenced by ecclesiastic architecture from Ireland. It is possible to climb up the inside of the tower and benefit from the views 22 metres up. Here can also be obtained a close-up view of the bell which dates from 1782. The tower today functions as ¬†bell tower for the adjacent Presbyterian Church.
