This evening, I am posting information on the game of Shinty which is popular in the Highlands of Scotland.

Summary facts and information:

  • Superficially similar to field hockey in that a team game played with sticks and a hard ball.
  • As historic affinity with Irish Hurling and as such may be about 2000 years old.
  • Players are allowed to use both sides of stick and play ball in the air.
  • Twelve players per team.
  • In Scotland there are league and cup competitions both of which are dominated by Kingussie. Game is also played in England and Wales, usually where there are numbers of expatriate Highlanders.
