Snowdon Mountain Railway, Wales

This evening, I am posting information on Snowdon Mountain Railway, a narrow gauge rack and pinion railway in North Wales.

Summary information as follows:

  • Covers 4.7 miles from Llanberis to the summit of Mount Snowdon which reaches 3560 feet.
  • Principal purpose is to carry tourists up and down the mountain.
  • The railway dates from 1894 using a Swiss patented technology and engines from the same country. Four of the original engines are still working.
  • Carriages seat 74 passengers.
  • Services are in operation March to October with departures from Llanberis.
  • Journey time from Llanberis to summit, Yr Wyddfa, is one hour with a thirty minute stop at the summit.
  • The travel experience today is virtually unchanged from that of the late 19th century.
  • Subject to weather conditions, the journey affords excellent views over the Snowdonia National Park scenery.
