Tour group at Dumfries House, Scotland

Touyr group in grounds of Dumfries House

This morning,m we departed our lodgings in York, England drove for four hours north to our destination of Dumfries House in East Ayrshire, Scotland. We duly arrived in time for our scheduled 1.30 pm tour of the house interior which lasted about 90 minutes.

Dumfries House was built between 1754 and 1759  to a design by top Scottish architects, the Adam Brothers. This architectural masterpiece was the property of the Marquesses of Bute for 250 years until saved for the nation by a consortium led by HRH The Prince of Wales in June 2007.

Dumfries House is, effectively, a time capsule from the Georgian era.

Inside is one of the world’s finest collections of 18th century British furniture including many items by Thomas Chippendale and his Scottish contemporaries.

The grounds extend to 2000 acres. In the immediate vicinity of the house are walking trails, a young arboretum and a walled garden.

After concluding our visit to Dumfries House we drove north for about one hour to Glasgow where guests checked into their lodgings for the night.

Tomorrow we explore Glasgow.
