Single Malts at Aberfeldy Distillery, Scotland

This morning, we departed our lodgings in Dufftown, Speyside and embarked on a 2 hr 30 min drive south to our first destination of Pitlochry in Perthshire, central Scotland.

The route traversed stunning Highlands scenery which was partly obscured by rain and cloud for most of the morning. We passed through heather clad hills populated with sheep and game birds. We passed a couple of castles, namely Corgarff and Braemar, and two ski centres, Lecht and Glenshee.

On arrival at Pitlochry we paid a brief visit to Edradour Distillery and then availed of time shopping culminating in a tasting at Blair Atholl Distillery. Blair Atholl has a capacity of 2.8m litres p.a. most of which goes into Bell’s blends but a 12 year old single malt is available.

Next, we moved on to nearby Aberfeldy Distillery which is the home of Dewar’s World of Whisky. Aberfeldy has a capacity of 3.5m litres p.a. with most of output being the heart of various Dewar’s blends such as White Label. Key single malt product is the 12-year-old. We toured the distillery and availed of tastings.

On concluding our visit to Aberfeldy we drove east, through increasingly inclement weather, to our destination of St Andrews where we checked into our lodgings for the night before dining out in the town.

Tomorrow, we visit Kingsbarns Distillery and the Fife Coast.
