Tour Group tasting at Glenkinchie Distillery, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery which is located about sixteen miles, S.E. of Edinburgh close to village called Pencaitland.

There are records of a distillery being founded on the site in 1825. However, between 1853 and re-establishment in 1890, there was a hiatus during which no distilling occurred and the buildings used for other purposes.

Since 1890 the site has been continuously used for whisky production and is now under ownership of drinks giant, Diageo.

Other facts and information concerning Glenkinchie Distillery:

  • As the only distillery close to Edinburgh, around 40,000 visitors each year visit and join the tours. There is now a regular shuttle bus between Edinburgh and Glenkinchie.
  • Production equipment includes a full lauter mash tun, six wooden washbacks and one pair of stills.
  • Capacity is 2.5m litres p.a.
  • A 12 year-old single malt is the flagship product. Other expressions include a Distillers Edition 14 year-old, a cask strength (no age statement) and a 20 year-old.
  • Glenkinchie forms one of the six Classic Malts of Scotland range from Diageo. The other malts in this group are Oban, Cragganmore, Talisker, Dalwhinnie and Lagavulin.
  • The standard tour lasts about one hour.
