House for an Art Lover, Glasgow, Scotland

This evening, I am focusing on Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s House for an Art Lover  in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow, Scotland. This is just one of a portfolio of buildings left for posterity by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928). Mackintosh was a Glasgow based artist and designer whose output ranged from jewellery to graphics, from wall decoration to exhibited paintings, from pottery to vases to wood engraving. He also designed entire buildings including foundations, ventilation systems and plumbing. He was one of the ‘Glasgow Four’ which included his artist wife, Margaret McDonald.

The House for an Art Lover design arose from a entry in a 1901 competition set by a German magazine which required plans for Haus Eines Kunstfreundes. This sought a design for ‘a grand house in a thoroughly modern style’ and challenged architects to develop ideas which were fresh and innovative.  Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret McDonald worked on the submission but were disqualified due to technical non-compliance with the rules. However the couple were awarded a special prize “for their pronounced personal quality, their novel and austere form and the uniform configuration of interior and exterior.”

Although designed in 1901 a suitable site did not become available until the 1980s. Construction commenced 1989 and finished 1996.

The architecture and design is complemented by surrounding parkland and well maintained gardens.

On site is a gift shop and restaurant.

House for an Art Lover is an essential component of a Mackintosh themed tour of Glasgow.
