Patient canine at Dundonald Castle, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on today’s small group hike between Dundonald and Troon in South Ayrshire, S.W. Scotland. Distance covered was about seven miles.

This area is perhaps best known for the Royal Troon Golf Club and Prestwick Airport.

The hike was undertaken in reasonable weather conditions for Scotland in early March, mainly dry but with strong winds. The group encountered a variety of sites and experiences including:

  • Dundonald Castle, which dates from the 1370s and which replaced at least two earlier castles.
  • Site of a ¬†demolished mansion known as Fullarton House which dates from 1745.
  • A public park known as Fullarton Estate.
  • Snowdrops.
  • A horse in a partly flooded field.
  • Extensive sandy beach.
  • Airplanes overhead.
  • Bird life.
  • Deciduous woodlands.
