Scotland’s Tree of the Year 2015

This evening my post has an arboreal theme.

In course of a recent visit to Glasgow University I encountered a decorated oak near to Kelvin Way in the Kelvingrove area.

Although appearing relatively young, the oak tree illustrated was planted on April 20th 1918 to commemorate the granting of voting rights to women. It is known as the ‘Suffragette Oak’.

There us currently in process a competition to determine the European Tree of the Year in which sixteen countries are participating. The Suffragette Oak was the winning candidate from Scotland. The overall, European winner will be announced on April 20th 2016.
