Hume Castle, Kelso, Scottish Borders

This evening, I am posting information on Hume Castle which is located near Kelso in the Scottish Borders region.

Summary facts and information as follows:

  • Origins date back to a classic medieval castle of the 12th/13th centuries as hereditary base of the Hume/Home family.
  • Occupies a natural, high elevation vantage point with views of Cheviot Hills to guard against invading English armies.
  • Strengthened during 1540s and thereafter experienced ┬áthree changes of English-Scots control until finally attacked and destroyed by Cromwell’s forces in 1651.
  • Site later acquired by 3rd Lord Marchment (Home family) who rebuilt the outer walls in a stylised fashion to serve as a romantic, landscape feature (known as a folly).
  • Open to the public.
