Today, I returned from Oban on Scotland’s West Coast to Glasgow, a journey of about one hundred miles.

I determined this to be a wildlife and scenery trip, a theme aided by a spot of superb warm and sunny weather.

First, I joined a one hour boat trip from Oban Harbour with emphasis on seals. This was a success in that we obtained close-up views of a colony of common seals basking on a rock. The seals bask in this manner to (a) protect themselves from predators and (b) increase their body temperatures, out of the cold water. We benefited from a bonus in that, near to the seals, we witnessed a Sea Otter in the medium distance. This is the first time I have observed such an animal which is an endangered species.

The seal trip afforded a good opportunity for photographs of Oban and environs in the excellent light conditions.

Next, I drove about nine miles north of Oban to visit the Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary. Here I was able to observe more common seals, albeit in closer proximity. Unfortunately, however, the resident otter was availing of a siesta at time of my visit, and not visible.

Next, I continued S.W. stopping to photograph Kilchurn Castle on the northern tip of Loch Awe. I incurred a wet foot in the boggy landscape but was rewarded with excellent photo opportunities with bonus of a skein of geese which flew over at exactly the right time.
