Dunollie Castle, Oban, Scotland

Dunollie Castle, Oban, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on the romantic ruin of Dunollie Castle which occupies a rocky promontory about one mile from Oban in the west of Scotland. The castle is open to the public with good views obtained from the ferry en-route to the Isle of Mull.

This video clip puts the castle in context of Oban Harbour.

Together the site and castle have an interesting history. There may well have been a power base here around 6th-7th centuries AD at time of Dalriada. However, the castle originally dates from the 13th century (keep and courtyard fortress) subsequent to which a four storied keep was added in the 15th century. Historically associated with Clan MacDougall of Lorn the castle was abandoned in 1746.
