Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales

This evening, I am posting information on the popular tourist town of Llangollen (pop. 3650) in North-East Wales. The town is located about fifty one miles south of Liverpool in England.

Key visitor sites and places of interest in and around Llangollen include:

  • Llangollen Wharf with access to the Llangollen Canal and hence the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
  • Glyn Ceiriog scenic valley.
  • International Pavilion which is home to the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.
  • Llangollen Bridge which may date from the 14th century.
  • 13th century Corn Mill on bank of the River Dee. Building now houses a pub.
  • Llangollen Museum with its focus on the story of Llangollen through the ages.
  • Y Capel, former Baptist place of worship which now houses a library and Tourist Information Centre.
  • Armoury, a building which has been used for multiple uses since construction in 1835.
  • Plas Newydd, the world-famous home of the Ladies of Llangollen. Progressively evolved from a modest cottage to a Gothic fantasy.
  • St Collen’s Church, a 13th century building on a site dating back to the 6th century.
  • Heritage Steam Railway which operates over a ten-mile route through the Dee Valley.
  • Castell Dinas Bran or ‘Crow Castle’. Access to this 13th century ruin entails a 20-30 minute hike up from Llangollen. The high elevation site offers superb views over the local landscape.
