A description of Bunnahabhain malts.

This evening, I am focusing on Bunnahabhain Distillery, near Port Askaig, Islay, Scotland.

Bunnahabhain was founded in 1881 and subsequently underwent numerous changes of ownership, closures and mothballing until acquired by Burns Stewart Distilleries in 2003. Capacity is 2.7m litres p.a. Core product range consists of:

  • 12-year-old.
  • 18-year-old
  • 25-year-old
  • Cruach-Mhona (peated)
  • Ceobanach (peated)
  • 10-year-old peated version called Toiteach
  • Black Bottle (blend).

A mix of ex-bourbon and sherry casks is used for the 12, 18 and 25 year olds.

Historically, and unusually for an Islay distillery, Bunnahabhain spirit was unpeated but the peated content has progressively increased to about 20 pct of output to satisfy the single malt market and demand for the popular Black Bottle blend.

Tours and tastings are available.
