Kennacraig Ferry Port, Kintyre, Scotland

This evening, I am posting information on the remote ferry port of Kennacraig which is located on the N.W.tip of the Kintyre peninsula on Scotland’s West Coast.

Kennacraig is the key access port for the small and remote but economically important island of Islay which is home to eight distilleries which collectively produce about eight per cent of Scotland’s whisky output by volume. Whisky is Scotland’s single largest export category which reaches about 200 countries worldwide. Virtually all of the whisky produced on Islay passes through the Kennacraig port facility. Similarly, all surface visitors to/from Islay pass through Kennacraig on their way to/from Port Askaig or Port Ellen.

Kennacraig is somewhat bleak and isolated. Nearest town of note is Tarbert which is deserving of a visit.

Image below shows a typical ferry, in this case M.V. Finlaggan.
