Glenfinnan Viaduct.

This evening, I am focusing on the Glenfinnan Viaduct which forms part of the West Highland Railway line between Fort William and Mallaig. This line was constructed between 1897 and 1901, with the actual Viaduct constructed 1897-98.

The Viaduct is located at the northern end of Loch Shiel, close to where ‘Bonnie’ Prince Charlie landed in 1745 in an ultimately doomed attempt to gain control of the thrones of Scotland and England by military force.

Facts and information concerning the viaduct:

  • Built entirely of concrete, a revolutionary form of construction in its day.
  • Comprises 21 arches.
  • Has featured in numerous films and TV productions including three Harry Potter films. The bridge has been unofficially re-named by some as the ‘Harry Potter Bridge’.
  • During the tourist season, many visitors come to watch the Jacobite Express steam train trundle across the Viaduct. However, popularity of this event is such that parking at the site has become full to over capacity which can give rise to disappointment.

The best vantage point to view the train crossing the bridge is from a hill behind the National Trust Visitor Centre. This entails a steep scramble but visitors are also rewarded with views of Loch Shiel to the south.
