Cill Chriosd Church, Isle of Skye.

This evening, I am focusing on the ruined church of Cill Chriosd which can be found close to the B8083 road which links Broadford with Elgol. The church is about three miles from Broadford.

The Isle of Skye is a popular tourist destination which forms part of the Inner Hebrides off Scotland’s N.W. coast.

The Gaelic name translates as ‘Christ’s Church’. Pertinent facts and information concerning this church:

  • Located on an ancient Christian site, possibly dating back 1400 years.
  • Dates from 16th/17th centuries and replaced an earlier, medieval church architectural evidence of which has been incorporated in the structure.
  • Was the parish church of Strathaird until 1843 when superseded by a new church in nearby Broadford.
  • The first Protestant Minister was appointed in 1627.
  • The adjacent burial ground contains many graves of members of Clan Mackinnon of Coirechatachan.
  • Over the long period of Christian occupation at the site worship would have progressed from Celtic Church to Roman Catholic to Presbyterian.

The site is easily accessed from the road and a visit to connect with Skye’s distant past is worthwhile.
