Royal Dornch Golf Club

This evening, I am posting information on Royal Dornoch, a 18 hole, links golf course located in the N.E. of Scotland, some 200 miles from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Remote location adds to appeal but at same time militates against holding of major championships at the course.

Summary information:

  • Established 1877 although there are records of golf having been played at the Dornoch links since 1616.
  • On opening was a nine-hole course which was extended to 18 holes in 1887.
  • Holes are strung out along Embo Bay with views of the sea from each hole.
  • A favourable micro-climate mitigates extremes of weather that would otherwise be expected in this part of Scotland.
  • Patronage increased with arrival of the railway in 1903.
  • The course measures 6514 yards and follows a natural ‘S’ shape along the line of the shore.
  • Par is 73 with four par 3s and two par 5s.

Dornoch is a pleasant town in its own right with a famous Cathedral. Nearby is Dunrobin Castle.
