Quaint Cottage at Aldochlay, Loch Lomond, Scotland

This morning, I collected guests on arrival at Glasgow Airport and embarked on a tour as summarised below.

First to Loch Lomond where we stopped briefly at Aldochlay and Luss.

Next to Auchentoshan Distillery which was first licensed in 1823 but may date back to 1800 or earlier.

Auchentoshan Single Malts

Facts and information on Auchentoshan:

  • Part of Suntory Group of Japan. Sister distilleries are Bowmore (Islay), Laphroaig (Islay) and Glen Garioch (Highlands).
  • The only Scottish distillery which triple distills.
  • Capacity is 2.0m litres p.a.
  • Most of the spirit is matured in ex-bourbon casks from Kentucky and Tennessee.
  • Key single malts are American Oak and Three Wood.

Auchentoshan Distillery

At Auchentoshan we benefited from a private tour led by an excellent guide who took us through the entire malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and,maturation processes culminating in a tasting.

Next to Glengoyne Distillery in the Trossachs region at Dumgoyne. Summary information as follows:

Glengoyne Distillery, Scotland

  • Straddles the Highlands-Lowlands whisky region border. Spirit is distilled in the Highlands and matured in the Lowlands.
  • Originally licensed in 1833.
  • Has undergone three changes of ownership since establishment but remains in private hands., now owned by Ian Macleod Distillers.
  • The distillery uses one, 3.8 ton semi-lauter mash tun, six Oregon pine washbacks, one wash still and two spirit stills.
  • Maturation undertaken in ex-sherry casks.
  • Range consists of  10, 12, 15,18 21 and 25-year-old single malts.

At Glengoyne we joined a tour which took us through the same processes as at Auchentoshan together with tastings.

Finally, we moved on to our next destination of Stirling and our lodgings fro the night.
