Lochwinnoch nature (bird) reserve.

This evening, I am posting information on the pleasant, residential community of Lochwinnoch which lies about 20 miles (32 km)  S.W.of Glasgow in the west of Scotland.

Summary information as follows:

  • Origin of name not clear. May mean ‘Loch of the Birds’. There is no Loch (lake) Winnoch .
  • History dates back to the 12th century although the area was inhabited in prehistoric times.
  • Situated on southern bank of Castle Semple Loch. (See image below.)
  • Population about 2600.
  • In the 18th and 19th centuries was home to numerous textile mills and furniture making enterprises.
  • Community is served by three churches: two Presbyterian and one Catholic.
  • Home to a wetlands bird watching centre which is located on the southern end of Castle Semple Loch.
  • Served by a railway line. A second railway line was closed and the route converted to a cycle and walking path with direct link to Paisley.
  • Water and land based recreational facilities are available at Castle Semple Visitor Centre on the western side of the loch.
