The Highland Clearances took place between, 1750-1850 when the old Scottish clan land system was disbanded and thousands of Highlanders were ejected from their homes to make way for large-scale sheep farming. Many of the dispossessed emigrated to Canada, United States and Australasia. Badbea, on the east coast of Caithness is a ruined village which allows the public to connect with the infamous period of the clearances.
