Tour group at Blair Castle

This morning, we departed our lodgings in Pitlochry and embarked on a tour ending in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.

First call was Edradour Distillery where we arrived at 9.45 am and were provided with a private tour covering the malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation processes. ¬†Edradour was once Scotland’s smallest distillery but has recently moved up the ranks and is currently in process of a major expansion programme which will see output rise from 130k litres p.a. to 400k litres p.a.

Summer scene at Fortingall

This morning, we departed Inverness and embarked on a tour as follows:

  • First to nearby Culloden, site of the last battle on British soil in 1746. Here the forces of Bonnie Prince Charlie were defeated by a British army under General Cumberland.

Blair Castle, Scotland.

This evening, I am focusing on Blair Castle near Pitlochry in Central Scotland. This is now a popular visitor attraction and conveniently situated on the main A9 tourist route north to Inverness. The property is the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Atholl, a title which was granted in 1703 in return for loyalty to the Stewart dynasty of Scottish royalty.
