This morning, we departed our lodgings at Inveraray’s George Hotel and then walked to nearby Inveraray Castle, seat of the Duke of the Argyll and Chief of Clan Campbell.

This morning, I collected guests from Glasgow hotel and then proceeded to:
Dumbarton Castle. This has long history dating back at least 1500 years when was the central power base for the Kingdom of Strathclyde. In more recent times (19th C) was reinforced to defend against a perceived invasion threat from France. Excellent views of the Clyde, and Greenock in the distance.
This evening, my theme is Inveraray, a fascinating -and unusual-planned 18th century town on the shores of Loch Fyne in the West of Scotland.
I usually incorporate a visit/overnight in Inveraray in course of my Scotland tours. It fits nicely when coming down from Oban and Kilmartin Glen on the way to Glasgow. In peak season the town can be very busy with visitors. Many coach tours stop here.
To my mind the key sites to visit are:
- Auchindrain Museum, a reconstructed Highland Village replicating life in bygone days.
- Inveraray Castle. In fact an Adam designed Grand House dating from the 18th century. Home to the duke of Argyll and Chief of Clan Campbell.
- The 18th century planned town of Inveraray featuring Old Jail, church and may other interesting buildings of architectural interest.
- The extensive Loch Fyne, famous for its oysters.
- Loch Fyne Oyster Bar, a high fish restaurant located about 5 miles out of town.
Overall its best to allocate at least a full day to get the full benefit from a visit to Inveraray.
