The Roman remains at Dunning represent the northern rampart of a fortified marching (short-term) camp which was enclosed within a shallow ditch and palisade constructed by Roman troops.The site probably dates from the Flavian campaigns of the AD 80s and as such may be contemporary with the Inchtuthil site. This location is a candidate for the site of the famous battle of Mons Graupius in AD 83 or AD 84.

This morning, we departed Kyleakin, Skye and embarked on a trip to Luss, Loch Lomond. Journey entailed a ferry crossing to Mallaig then, Glenfinnan, Fort William and Glencoe.

Chesters was one of a number of principal forts built to enhance defences of Hadrian’s Wall and provide a base for offensive, northward strikes into enemy territory to the north. The Wall straddled the fort with three of the fort’s gates facing north.
