Mackintosh Design at house for an Art Lover

Mackintosh Design at house for an Art Lover, Glasgow

Today, I took two guests on a Charles Rennie Mackintosh architecture themed tour of Glasgow.

Mackintosh (1868-1928) was a talented designer and architect with wide ranging skills covering paintings, chairs, furniture and a wide array of domestic use items through to complete buildings. He was primarily focused on design of places to be inhabited with focus on tooms, light and material. He worked closely with his wife, Margaret MacDonald plus two others, Herbert MacNair and Francis MacDonald. These were collectively known as the ‘Glasgow Four’ who worked within the Glasgow School of Art around 1890-1910 producing decorative works of furniture, architecture, panels, embroideries and graphic material.

This morning, our tour commenced with a visit to the Govan Carved Stones at Govan Old Church. This comprises a collection of early medieval sculpture from the 9th, 10th, and 11th centuries AD with designs representing a merger of influences from the Picts, Irish, Anglian, Cumbrian and Scandinavian styles. Here can be found the stone sarcophagus of King Constantine a 9th century king from the local area of Strathclyde, the earliest known piece of art in Glasgow.

Today, our small group cultural tour focused on charles Rennie Mackintosh sites within Glasgow, Scotland. At about 26 C  temperature was hot by Scottish standards and sun glare affected photographs.

First stop was the Queen’s Cross Church  which was commissioned by the Free Church of Scotland for a congregation of 820 and completed in 1899. The building is no longer used for worship and is now used as the H.O.of the Mackintosh Society. The design reveals a sophisticated handling of form, ornament and symbolic meaning.

The group was given a well informed talk on the building by a Director of the Mackintosh Society.
