Arrival of Charles

On August 19th 1745 Charles Edward Stuart “Bonnie Prince Charlie” landed on the shores of Loch Shiel at Glenfinnan. This was the catalyst of a military based challenge to claim the crowns of England and Scotland for the House of Stuart. Some eighty years earlier Charles’s grandfather, James II had been expelled by the British establishment owing to James’s catholicism subsequent to which Britain had been governed as a protestant country.

Piper at Loch Lomond, Scotland

This morning, I collected guests from central Edinburgh and embarked on a tour as follows:

  • First, drive west for 90 mins to our first stop at Luss, Loch Lomond. Here we saw quaint, historic houses, Loch Lomond (lake) and Ben Lomond (mountain) resplendent in morning sunshine, a talented young piper, a wedding party, Viking era ‘hogback’ burial at Luss Church, and duck with ducklings on local river.
