Cairngorm Mountains, Aviemore

Cairngorm Mountains, Aviemore, Scotland

This morning, we departed our lodgings at Ballifeary Guest House, Inverness after breakfast and drove south to our first stop at Aviemore. This small town is located in the Cairngorm mountain region and is popular with hikers, birdwatchers and outdoor enthusiasts. We had coffee at a high elevation restaurant which offorded superb views over the snow-capped mountains. Our visit coincided with the scheduled  departure of the Strathspey Steam Train  from Aviemore which was an added bonus.

Next we drove down the A9 to our next stop of Dunkeld with a photo stop for Blair Castle en-route..At Dunkeld tour guest played his Scottish Small Pipes  in the Taybank Pub which itself is a popular music venue. We also had a light lunch here. After a short walk around the centre of Dunkeld we continued south to our next destination of Stirling Castle, one of Scotland’s top visitor attractions.

We visited all main aspects of Stirling Castle including Great Hall, Royal Chapel and Kitchens. The recently restored Royal Apartments were of particular interest with assistance from actors in period costume.

After departing Stirling Castle, we continued south to our final destination of Edinburgh but  first availing of a light meal at the Granary Pub on Leith’s popular waterfront.

Final drop-off was neraby where we exchanged fond farewells at conclusion of  a fascinating 10 day round Scotland tour with emphasis on the Outer Hebrides.

Spamalot, King's Theatre
Spamalot, King’s Theatre, Glasgow
This evening, I dipped into Glasgow’s rich cultural and entertainment scene by attending a performance of ‘Spamalot’ at the King’s Theatre. This is a superb musical based on the film ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ in turn the product of Messrs Chapman, Cleese, Gilliam, Idle, Jone and Palin. Essentially, Spamalot is a humorous take on the storey of the legendary King Arthur. A very good show fully deserving its popularity with the theatre going public.

Glasgow is well endowed with theatres the more prominent of which are: the Citizens, King’s, Theatre Royal, Pavilion, Ramshorn, Tramway and Tron

Tomorrow, I have to arrange some evening entertainment in Glasgow for a group of high end visitors on a golfing trip.
River Doon and Brig O'Doon

River Doon and Brig O'Doon, Alloway

This evening, I am focusing on the charming village of Alloway which is located close to Ayr, south of Glasgow. Alloway is synonymous with Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, who was born here on Jan 25th 1759 in a two roomed thatched cottage built in 1757 by his father, William. This building still exists ( see image below) and has been transformed into a visitor attraction reflecting the style of the late 18th century. Effectively, Alloway is now a Burns ‘shrine’ featuring the birthplace, Auld Kirk, Burns Monument, Birthplace Museum and the Brig O’ Doon all of which are featured below.

Here is one of the interior rooms of Burns Cottage. This building is now owned/managed by Scotland’s National Trust and has been re-named as Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. The garden at rear of the cottage is managed along the lines consistent with the the 18th century.

The graveyard at the Auld Kirk contains the grave of William Burnes, the Poet’s father. ( Spelling is correct. Robert’s father changed his name from Burnes to Burns.)

Here is the Grecian style Burns Monument which dates from 1823. Inside is a small museum. The Monument offers a good vantage point to view the nearby Brig O’Doon.

Here is the Auld Brig O’Doon  ( Old Bridge over River Doon). This bridge was made famous as the setting for Tam O’Shanter’s mare Meg losing her tail to the witch Nannie.
