Mangerton was a Tower House and important power base for the Armstrongs at a time when the entire Scottish Borders region was lawless. There is a record of one Alexander Armstrong at the Tower in 1378 followed by Armstrong family ownership through to 1629 when the property was transferred to Francis Scott, Thereafter, the Tower appears to have gone into decline.

Today, we embarked on a twelve-hour, Glasgow-Langholm-Glasgow tour with emphasis on Clan Armstrong in the Langholm region of the Scottish Borders. Sites covered included Rowanburn, Gilnockie Tower, Langholm Castle, Tourneyholm, Ettleton Cemetery, Milnholm Cross, Mangerton Tower and Carlenrig.



Lanholm and River Esk, Scottish Borders.

This evening, I am focusing on Langholm in the Scottish Borders region, about seventy-eight miles south of Edinburgh.

This town (population of about 2500) has an interesting history most prominent aspect of which is involvement with the Border Reivers era and Clan Armstrong in particular. Today the town is closely associated with Clan Armstrong which in turn is identified with nearby Gilnockie Tower. A summary of history and related facts:
