The Roman amphitheatre at Chester had a chequered history.Built in the AD70s but became derelict after the 20th Legion was posted north in the 120s AD to work on construction of Hadrian’s Wall. Brought back into use around AD 275 and remained functioning until final abandonment around AD 350.

Bignor Roman Villa in Susses, England was founded in 1st century AD and progressively grew in size (probably due to wealth created by farming) to reach a peak in the 4th century AD. Bignor is one of the largest villas in Britain and boasts some of the finest mosaics.
