Chesters was one of a number of principal forts built to enhance defences of Hadrian’s Wall and provide a base for offensive, northward strikes into enemy territory to the north. The Wall straddled the fort with three of the fort’s gates facing north.

Tonight I am posting posting information on a recent (June 9th and 10th) small group hike along the line of Hadrian’s Wall in northern England where the village of Chollerford, near Chesters Roman Fort,  was used as a base.

Today we visited sites on Hadrian’s Wall then Durham Cathedral. The sites on the former were Brunton Turret, Chesters Roman Fort and Housesteads Roman Fort.
