<p>Currently Scotland/U.K. is enduring the coldest March for about 50 years. Arran, off the west of Scotland has been particularly hard hit with heavy snow contributing to an island-wide electricity outage. Intrigued by this I today paid a short visit to Arran on my bike intending to visit the areas most badly affected by snowfall but, unfortunately, the access road was closed so I ventured off up the west coast to Corrie and Sannox. <p>This evening, I am focusing on Scotland&#8217;s fascinating and diverse geology.</p>
<p>Over the past 500 million years the land which now comprises Scotland has drifted from a position well south of the equator up across the equator to its current position about 56 degrees north, on roughly the same latitude as Labrador and Moscow. This long journey entailed exposure to submersion by oceans, desert conditions, tropical rain-forests, ice sheets and a physical join (collision) with England &#38; Wales all of which has impacted on landscapes and geology.
