The One o’Clock Gun at Edinburgh Castle dates back 157 years when it was set up as an aid to navigation for ships using the ports of Leith and Firth of Forth over two miles away. The only alternative at the time was the Calton Hill Time Ball which was often obscured by adverse weather or being out of line of sight.Thus, an audible signal offered advantages.

This afternoon, I undertook a hike around the Leith district of Edinburgh in eastern  Scotland. This was and remains a commercial area with emphasis on shipping via the Port Of Leith. Some of the old industrial buildings have been replaced with attractive modern housing.

Hiking group with canine friend

This evening, I am reporting on today’s small group hike along a walkway centred on the Water of Leith (river) flowing through Edinburgh, Scotland, to the nearby Port of Leith where it connects with the sea via the Firth of Forth (bay or estuary). The river is  twenty miles long and rises in the Colzium Springs.
