Browsing Posts in Chester

This evening, I visited Chester in N.W. England where sites of interest included Roman heritage, River Dee, Cathedral, interesting architecture, impressive Town Hall, canal dating from 1772, very old shopping galleries and a Roman amphitheatre.

The Roman amphitheatre at Chester had a chequered history.Built in the AD70s but became derelict after the 20th Legion was posted north in the 120s AD to work on construction of Hadrian’s Wall. Brought back into use around AD 275 and remained functioning until final abandonment around AD 350.

Today, we visited Chester in N.W. England with emphasis on the Roman period including the walls, amphitheatre and underground architecture.
