The Highland Clearances took place between, 1750-1850 when the old Scottish clan land system was disbanded and thousands of Highlanders were ejected from their homes to make way for large-scale sheep farming. Many of the dispossessed emigrated to Canada, United States and Australasia. Badbea, on the east coast of Caithness is a ruined village which allows the public to connect with the infamous period of the clearances.

Today, we travelled from Inverness to Scrabster visiting the following en-route: Black Isle; Chanonry Point; Cromarty; Dunrobin Castle; and Balbea.

This morning we travelled from Kirkwall on Orkney to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands.

First stage was transfer from Kirkwall to Stromness where we connected with the 11.00 am ferry crossing to Scrabster on the Scottish mainland. The crossing ran on time and took ninety minutes.
