Falls of Clyde at New Lanark, Scotland

In course of last couple of days the S.W. of Scotland has experienced very heavy rainfall leading to localised flooding. With this in mind drove to New Lanark World Heritage Site to view the Falls of Clyde in full flow. Regrettably, the only still image I took was from a cellphone camera (above) which is of mediocre quality. However, I did take a number of reasonable quality video clips which are provided below and which demonstrate the sheer force and volume of water. As I drove back to Glasgow I followed the Clyde Valley and noted that the river was close to bursting its banks in a number of places. The rain continues as I write this!

River Clyde at Greenock, Glasgow

This evening, I am focusing on the River Clyde, west of Scotland. This river rises in the Lowther Hills in South Lanarkshire and runs for 106 miles, passing the city of Glasgow and into the sea past Greenock.

Today, our main focus was the key sites in and around Glasgow.

After first attending to flight confirmations for following day we proceeded as follows:

To Pollock Park to view and photograph a small herd of Highland Cattle which are very placid and photogenic animals.

Today, commenced with a very early start. At 5.00am I was able to take some stunning images of a brilliant red sunrise at Broadford on Skye.

Visit Drumclog Scotland

This evening, I am presenting some images of a recent tour entailing a visit to Drumclog.

Drumclog is famous for the battle which occurred there in 1679 when the Covenanters clashed with the forces of the establishment-and won.

The image below is a memorial to the battle and is located on the battle site which is some 6 miles south west of Strathaven in Lanarkshire.

This is the Drumclog Memorial Kirk which was built in 1912 and is named in remembrance of the Battle adverted to above. During June of each year a service is held to remember the Battle.

This evening I am posting an image from a recent ancestry themed tour covering Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire. We stopped at Drumclog Memorial Kirk which dates from 1812 and maintains a historic connection with the Battle of Drumclog 1679 when the Covenanters defeated the Government forces.

Drumclog is located on A71 between Strathaven and Darvel. Not far away is located Loudon Hill, a prominent feature on the landscape.

Tour of Strathaven Castle South Lanarkshire

This evening I am presenting an image of Strathaven Castle which sits on a rocky mound above the conservation village which shares its name.

The first castle was built by a branch of the Baird family. The first stone castle was built c 1350 but burned down in the 1450s.possibly in context of a strategy of James II to curb power of local nobles. The castle was gifted by the King to Sir Andrew Stewart and subsequently acquired by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart. Later, in 1611, the castle was passed to the Marquess and Dukes of Hamilton in 1611 in whose hands the castle remained until 1912

The castle is close to the town centre and entry is free. Worth a visit if in the area.

Tour Strathaven Scotland

This evening I am posting images of my recent visit to the South Lanarkshire town of Strathaven
I visited the town centre, Avendale church and castle

Unfortunately Google won’t let me upload the images-will try again another day.

Strathaven is certainly a nice little town and worthy of a visit if in the area.
