Scottish Blackface Sheep at Aberfoyle

This morning, we departed our lodgings in Dunkeld and drove south for one hour to our first stop of Inchmahome Priory which is located on an island in the Lake of Menteith. This now ruined structure dates from the 13th century and was home to a contingent of Augustinian canons. Our key reason for visiting the site was the Mary, Queen of Scots connection; Mary was taken here as a child, in September 1547, for safety in the face of threat from an English army based near Edinburgh

Royal Apartments, Stirling Castle

This morning, we departed our Edinburgh lodgings and drove south for about 20 mins to visit Edinburgh’s ‘other’ castle, Craigmillar.  This was originally owned by the Preston family then Gilmours and finally Government ownership after it fell into ruin. The fabric is now in good order and affords visitors an excellent insight into the medieval castle.
