Cranes at Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow

This afternoon, I was attracted by a unusual concentration of construction cranes on a site near the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow. After obtaining a few images I walked back to the centre along the interesting waterfront encountering a wide range of interesting constructions en-route.

Tour Glasgow Architecture, Tour Glasgow

John Knox Monument, Glasgow Necropolis, Scotland

Today, I escorted two guests on a short architecture themed tour of Glasgow.

We commenced with the famous necropolis near Glasgow Cathedral. Here there are some 50,000 burials dating from around the 1830s onwards. Many of the memorials commemorate the ‘great and good’ of Victorian Glasgow which at the time ranked as the second city of the British Empire and was home to wealthy business people.

Visit Govan, Visit Glasgow

Defunct Drydock at Govan, River Clyde

This evening, I am focusing on Govan which is a very old community opposite the confluence of the Rivers Clyde and Kelvin. The site of Govan Old Church may date back to the 6th century (as a Christian site) and possibly earlier. Judging from evidence of carved medieval stones (on display in the Old Church) Govan may well have been the base of a local royal line or power centre during the 9th-11th centuries before being eclipsed by Glasgow.

Visit Dumbarton, Visit Scotland

Dumbarton and Ben Lomond from Dumbarton Castle, Scotland

This evening, my focus is on the often overlooked town of Dumbarton, a place of great historic significance. The name derives from dun breatainn or ‘fort of the Britons’ from the time when the place was capital of the ancient British kingdom of Strathclyde which covered S.W.Scotland and parts of northern England during the 7th-9th centuries AD. At that time the language spoken was a form of Welsh.

Tall Ship 'Glenlee' at Glasgow

This evening, I am focusing on one of Glasgow’s visitor atrractions, namely the Tall Ship ‘Glenlee‘ which is now moored on the River Clyde close to the new Riverside (Transport) Museum.

Visit Riverside Transport Museum, Visit Glasgow

Today, I visited the new Riverside Museum on the banks of the River Clyde. This is a successor to the old Transport Museum and houses a wide collection of exhibits encompassing shipping, steam railway locomotives,vintage and veteran cars, motorcycles, tram cars, horse drwan vehicles, bicycles and ancient dug-out boats. Visit David Livingstone’s Birthplace, Visit Scotland

David Livingstone's Birthplace, Blantyre, Scotland

This afternoon, I visited the David Livingstone Visitor Centre and Birthplace at Blantyre near Glasgow.

Livingstone was a remarkable man. Born in 1813 and brought up in a tiny, one room apartment with eight other family members. Main source of employment was the nearby Textile Mill on the bank of the River Clyde where Livingstone himself commenced work at the tender age of ten years. However, he was extremely determined and went on to qualify as a doctor and then spent most of his adult life as a missionary and explorer in Africa eventually dying in what is now Tanzania in 1873. Livingstone’s heart is buried at Chitambo Village whilst his other remains were returned to Britain and interred in Westminster Abbey, London in 1874.

Visit Falls of Clyde, Visit Scotland

Falls of Clyde at New Lanark, Scotland

In course of last couple of days the S.W. of Scotland has experienced very heavy rainfall leading to localised flooding. With this in mind drove to New Lanark World Heritage Site to view the Falls of Clyde in full flow. Regrettably, the only still image I took was from a cellphone camera (above) which is of mediocre quality. However, I did take a number of reasonable quality video clips which are provided below and which demonstrate the sheer force and volume of water. As I drove back to Glasgow I followed the Clyde Valley and noted that the river was close to bursting its banks in a number of places. The rain continues as I write this!

Late this afternoon, I decided to experiment with some night photography down in central Glasgow.I travelled down on my bike in the rain but by the time I arrived at the Clyde the rain had eased off providing a reasonably clear night.

Squiggly Bridge, River Clyde, Glasgow

This evening, I am presenting a portfolio of images to illustrate the dynamic and impressive waterfront on the River Clyde in central Glasgow with its impressive range of architecture and engineering. This former shipbuilding and industrial area has been transformed in recent years and is now an important visitor attraction in its own right. In addition to architects and engineers who wish to study the various structures the locale is visually appealing and makes a good study topic for photographers, both day and night.
