This evening, I am focusing on fishing for sport in Scotland. This mainly takes place on major salmon and trout rivers such as the Tay, Tweed and Spey. However, there are multiple other possibilities including numerous lochs (lakes), smaller rivers, such as the Garry, Tummel and Esk, and the sea. The fishing season runs approximately from February to October each year. Above and below is a small portfolio of fishing related images which I have accumulated in course of tours around Scotland.

Today, I ventured into central Scotland with trip aided by unusual sunny weather and blue sky.

Here there are two towns with an almost seamless join, namely Birnam and Dunkeld. Both of these towns are popular with visitors to Scotland. Birnam is, perhaps, most famous for its Macbeth connection with Birnam Wood and Birnam Oak. The latter can viewed on bank of the River Tay although unlikely to be a relic from Shakespeare’s time.

This evening, I am focusing on the Falls of Dochart at Killin in Perthshire.

Killin is a small but popular tourist town at the southern tip of Loch Tay. The Falls are one of the popular visitor attractions which occur where the River Dochart runs downs a rocky gradient and on into Loch Tay just a mile or so downstream. The video clip shows the falls in full spate but in the summer months the water can be subdued and allow visitors to scramble over te rocks in and around the water.

This morning, I collected guests from Caledonian Hilton, Edinburgh and then proceeded as follows:

First to Dunfermline Abbey Church whose foundation dates from 1072. This is an interesting site comprising (a) the ruined Abbey (b) ruined former Royal Palace (c) the Abbey Church which is an active place of worship (Presbyterian) and location of burial of Scotland’s King Robert The Bruce (14th C). Effectively, this site was the capital of Scotland until 1603 when King James VI of Scotland moved to London to become King of England as well. We viewed all the principal aspects and availed of the scenic views towards the Firth of Forth.

This morning, I collected my tour group from Edinburgh New Town and then proceeded as follows:

First, about one hour drive to central Scotland with aim of visiting Stirling Castle, one of Scotland’s top tourist attractions. However, we were thwarted in our objective by no lesser a person than H.M. the Queen who was scheduled to visit the castle during the afternoon resulting in a closure of the castle to visitors until after her visit had concluded. Like many other visitors we diverted to nearby Doune Castle which has a link with Stirling Castle in that Doune was a former Royal hunting lodge for the Scottish royal family which resided at Stirling during medieval times.

This evening, our extremely cold spell continues with temperature tonight down to minus 7 C tonight then snow then a further drop in temperature. This is very unusual at this time of year and is causing the whole country to slow down a notch, mainly due to transport disruptions as a function of the snow and ice. For a change I have decided to depart from my series of winter images and provide a little variety via a focus on the mighty River Tay.
