The 19th century neo-Norman structure of Inverness Castle evident today has never witnessed warfare but pays tribute to a long and violent past of a succession of fortifications on the site dating back, possibly, to around the 6th century AD.

The Roman remains at Dunning represent the northern rampart of a fortified marching (short-term) camp which was enclosed within a shallow ditch and palisade constructed by Roman troops. The site probably dates from the Flavian campaigns of the AD 80s and as such may be contemporary with the Inchtuthil site. This location is a candidate for the site of the famous battle of Mons Graupius in AD 83 or AD 84.
