General Wade's Bridge, Aberfeldy

General Wade's Bridge, Aberfeldy, Scotland

Today, I visited the small town of Aberfeldy in central Scotland. This serves both the local community and is popular with visitors.

Above is the famous, General Wade’s Bridge dating from 1733. This was built by the British military as part of an extensive road building project in the Scottish Highlands.

Below is an image of the town’s whisky distillery which is part of the Dewars group and provides tours for visitors.

Here is the Black Watch pub. This is named after a famous Scottish regiment which was first raised in a field nearby around 1739.

Image form the Birks of Aberfeldy, a water and woodland setting close to Aberfeldy. A pleasant circular circuit is open to walkers. This location inspired Rabbie Burns to write ” Birks of Aberfeldie”.

Ring of Brodgar, Stone Circle

Ring of Brodgar, Stone Circle, Orkney

This evening, my post is focused on the famous Ring of Brodgar, a circle-henge which is located some 10 miles WNW of Kirkwall and in close proximity to other prehistoric sites such as Maes Howe and the Ring of Stenness.

The stone circle is positioned close to the inner edge of the ditch. Originally 60 but now twenty nine standing stones cover an area of 91000 Sq feet, it is the third largest of its kind in the British Isles. There is no central feature and the stones have an average height of 7 feet. There is no general agreement on the date the circle was erected but 2700 BC is plausible. There are no obvious astronomical alignments. Construction may have entailed 80,000 hours of manual labour at a time when only stone tools were available. A truly intriguing site.
