Today, Scotland, in common with many parts of the U.K., was paralysed by a harsh winter storm which resulted in cancelled trains, buses and flights. Over 1600 schools were closed (affecting 450,000 students) while many colleges, universities and businesses were also closed.

Overnight Glasgow,Scotland experienced a moderate snowfall on top of a previous layer of snow and ice.

Glasgow Airport was closed for a short while to permit clearing of runway and in the Scottish Highlands temperatures were reported to be down to minus 12 centigrade (10 degrees F.).

Today, winter arrived in the U.K. with a vengeance as manifested in heavy snow and ice disruption to road and air travel with thousands of homes left without power. In Glasgow, Scotland there was an upside in form of an unusual coincidence of brilliant sunshine, blue skies and light layer of snow and ice. Temperature today in Glasgow was around minus 2 degrees centigrade ( 28 F). A cold night is forecast with temperature hovering around at and just below freezing.
