Explorers Garden, Pitlochry

Explorers Garden, Pitlochry, Scotland

 This evening, I am focusing on the Explorers Garden at Pitlochry in Central Scotland. This was set up in memory of Scottish Plant Hunters who travelled the globe in search for new plants and trees for wide range of purposes including domestic cultivation, commerce and conservation. The garden is split into specific sections covering New Zealand, Australia, North America, Japan and the Himalayas. Names of particular plant hunters associated with the garden are:

Pass of Killiecrankie, Perthshire

Pass of Killiecrankie, Perthshire, Scotland

This evening, I am focusing on the stunning nature site of Killiecrankie which can be found roughly equidistant between Pitlochry and Blair Atholl (Blair Castle )  in central Scotland. I essence the site comprises a deep, wooded gorge at base of which flows the fast running River Garry.  In addition to the nature related attractions the site is also known for the Battle of Killiecrankie  which was fought in July 1689 between rebellious Jacobite troops and government forces. The name ‘Killiecrankie’ appears somewhat quirky to visitors and raises a  smile or two but actually translates as ‘Aspen Wood’ which appears very apposite.
